Dates calculated with the Umm al-Qura calendar. Depending on moon sighting and your country's announcements, a date may be one day apart.
How it works
Reading the calendar
- 1
Find the event
Each row gives the Gregorian date and the matching Hijri date.
- 2
Check the countdown
The last column shows how many days are left until the event.
- 3
Allow for one day
Depending on moon sighting in your country, a date may slip by one day.
A calendar that shifts by eleven days every year
The Hijri calendar is lunar: its twelve months have 29 or 30 days, which makes about 354 days a year. So it is roughly eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year. That's why Ramadan and the two Eids come about eleven days earlier each year, and move through all the seasons in a little over thirty years.
The dates in this calendar
The dates are calculated with the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia and the one used by the QuranWay app. In many countries, the start of the major months (Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Hijjah) depends on sighting the crescent or on an announcement by religious authorities: a date may then be one day apart.
Key moments of the year
- Islamic New Year (1 Muharram) and Ashura (10 Muharram), a day many people fast.
- Rajab, one of the four sacred months, with Isra and Mi'raj on the 27th according to the most widely held date.
- Ramadan, its last ten nights and Laylat al-Qadr, then Eid al-Fitr and the six days of fasting in Shawwal.
- The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, the Day of Arafah (9th), Eid al-Adha (10th) and the days of Tashriq (11th to 13th), when there is no fasting.
And every day, right in your pocket
In the QuranWay app, the Hijri calendar shows today's date in both calendars and the next occurrences of fifteen events, plus the white days, each with a countdown in days.
